My fascination with the New Jersey Meadowlands started on childhood drives between New Jersey and New York City in the 1960s. In the 1980s, I would gaze over their marshes from an office high in the World Trade towers. And in the late 1990s I began walking the area using satellite photos I taped together.

I walked about twice a week, sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend. We encountered moments of wonder: secret gardens, the stumps of ancient forests, hills of shattered colored glass glittering in the sun. We encountered gunfire. We evaded guard dogs, security personnel, police. Except when we didn't. We took our last walk the week before September 11.
The photographs in this book were taken in the New Jersey Meadowlands with a Hasselblad XPan between 2000 and 2001. They were commissioned by Okwui Enwezor for Documenta 11 in Kassel, Germany.
I am grateful to Hans Gremmen for giving this project the form it has been waiting for.
